What Is Exercise On Prescription?

Exercise on Prescription is an exercise referral scheme operated by the Isle of Wight Council’s 1Leisure in partnership with GP’s and health professionals across the island.

The service is run by the Isle of Wight, Public Health Wellbeing referral team. All Island’s GP’s and health professionals take part so you can get the help you need.

Your GP or health professional is always the first step.

Your GP may refer you to call the Wellbeing Service Referral team on 01983 823670.

1Leisure are one of the potential services you could be offered if it’s found that you need support with physical activity.

Other avenues that they might direct you to are Weight loss support or Stop smoking support

Why exercise?

Regular exercise reduces the risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. It is also good for mental health and can help improve mood and confidence, relieve anxiety and release endorphins to make us feel happier.

How do I join?

STEP 1 – Suitability

Speak to your GP or health professional about the suitability of exercise on prescription. They will direct you to call the Public Health team on 01983 823670. The Public Health team will help assess suitability and complete a form on your behalf that will be sent to 1Leisure.

STEP 2 – Leisure Centre

As part of the process you will be asked to choose your most convenient 1Leisure venue. The Exercise on Prescription coordinator from that site will then contact you to get you started.

STEP 3 – The Consultation

You will get a tour of the site from our referral coordinator. They will also run through a lifestyle and medical questionnaire to help understand the best way to get the most out of your visits. Please remember to bring along your recommendation form and a list of any medication you’re currently taking.

STEP 4 – The Programme

As you will be given a Gold One Card your programme could include swimming, water workouts and fitness classes as well as Tone Zone gym sessions.

What should I bring?

After your initial consultation please bring a towel, water bottle and wear comfortable, appropriate clothes for exercising in (Ideally training shoes, t-shirt or sweatshirt, shorts or tracksuit bottoms). Changing rooms and showers are available at all 1Leisure centres.

Where do I go?

The Exercise on Prescription scheme is operated at all three Isle of Wight 1Leisure facilities which makes it easy for you to choose the most convenient for you. There is free parking at Westridge and you will receive a permit to park for free at Medina and The Heights while you are on this programme.
